Research Assistance

Tracing Your Family History

Do you have a relative or ancestor who lived in Gainsborough? Would you like to try and find out more about them?  Interested in learning about other aspects of the towns past?

The Gainsborough Heritage Centre's research team will be able to assist and search the Centre's records and archives. The Centre's skilled team are dedicated to completing research requests on aspects of the towns past and the many families that have resided within Gainsborough. Please note that there is a small charge for any information the staff locate and charges, for example, a copy of a photo costs £5 and photocopying is available at £1 per copy. Members of the Centre must show their discount card to get 50% off photocopying charges.

The more information you can provide the staff with the better, but do not worry if you have not got a lot of information, as the staff will search the archives with the details you have provided. However, make sure your enquiry is as succinct as possible and concise, detailing your basic research and stating simply what you are looking for. Following this guidance will enable staff to proceed with any enquiry with speed and efficiency, as due to time constraints too much information will take a longer time period for volunteers to organise research for you.

The Heritage Centre is staffed entirely by a team of volunteers, so it can take the staff up to two working weeks to locate information but you will be updated as to the progress of the research. To start with email the Centre with your request to [email protected] or visit the Centre and ask to speak to a volunteer in the research library or ring 01427 610526.

Please note the Centre can only search for people who are deceased unfortunately the Centre is unable to assist with the tracing of living relatives or friends.
