Gainsborough Townscape Heritage Initiative

Historic Heart of GainsboroughHistoric Town Centre

Gainsborough is a beautiful, historic and characterful part of Lincolnshire. A market town that was briefly the capital of England and can lay claim to two queens. It was also the furthest inland port in the country and has arguably the finest medieval manor house in the country in the shape of the Old Hall.

In more recent times its rich and historic past has faded and the town has suffered from under-investment and progressive erosion of historic buildings’, shopfronts’ and architectural features, over many decades.

The Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) aims to restore the “historic heart of Gainsborough” by improving the standard of repair and reinstating the original appearance of properties within the town centre conservation area.

Historic Heart

West Lindsey District Council was successful in its bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help restore and improve some of the historic buildings in Gainsborough town centre. As well as improving the town centre, this will also help local people and visitors better understand the built heritage of the town.

About the initiative

The Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) is the Heritage Lottery Fund's grant-giving programme for the repair and regeneration of the historic environment in towns and cities throughout the UK.
