‘Cafe Latte’ a look back in time

This week we continue our investigation of the buildings which are targeted for grant assistance on Lord Street.  These grants are specifically to carry out essential repair work and to restore historic shop fronts, improving the character and appearance of the area.

Another grade II listed building, number 37 Lord Street is currently run as Caffe Latte.

This shop has previously been a shoe maker’s, butchers and building society.  It is probably best remembered as ‘Stovins’ the pork butchers in the early 20th Century.

We have created a Historic Heart Board which describes the known history of the building,  previous businesses that operated from there and the improvement work which could be done if the owner applies for a grant.

We stress once again that the Townscape Heritage Initiative is not able to force private owners to make improvements or to take the grant help that is on offer. All we can do is to regularly remind owners that the grants are available.  The project runs for a limited time and we are very keen to get these generous grants distributed, enabling us to co-ordinate the improvements along Lord Street and the Market Place.
